Recycled PET (rPET) Drinkware Corporate Buyer's Guide India 2026

Everything Indian procurement, HR, ESG and marketing teams need to know about recycled PET (rPET) bottles, tumblers and sippers — what rPET actually is, BIS and food-contact safety, GRS chain-of-custody verification, MOQ, branding, GST and the budget bands Corpokit ships across Delhi NCR and pan-India.

By Pawandeep Bhullar, Co-Founder, Corpokit

Quick answer: Recycled PET (rPET) drinkware is made from post-consumer PET bottles that are washed, flaked and re-extruded into food-grade resin, then moulded into bottles, tumblers and sippers. For Indian corporate gifting, credible rPET drinkware is GRS-certified (Global Recycled Standard), carries a BIS-compliant food-contact declaration, ships at MOQs from 100 pieces, and is priced ₹120–₹650 per piece with 10–14 day production lead times. Always insist on a GRS transaction certificate to avoid greenwashed virgin-PET substitutes.

Every sustainability brief that lands on an Indian HR or procurement desk in 2026 has the same line buried somewhere on slide 4: reduce single-use plastic, prefer recycled-content packaging where possible. For drinkware — the single most-gifted corporate category in India after apparel — the on-the-shelf answer is recycled PET, or rPET. It looks like a normal water bottle. It feels like one. It is one — except the resin started life as a discarded soft-drink bottle picked up from an Indian waste-stream, washed, flaked and re-extruded into food-grade pellets.

The problem: "rPET" has become one of the most casually mislabelled phrases in the Indian gifting supply chain. Half the bottles marketed as recycled are virgin PET in a tinted finish. The other half are genuine — but the buyer has no way to tell without a GRS (Global Recycled Standard) transaction certificate in hand and a food-contact safety declaration signed against IS 14625 and FSSAI norms.

This guide is what we wish every procurement, HR and ESG team in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad had on Page 1 before they signed off their first rPET drinkware PO. It covers the material itself, the certifications that actually prove recycled content, food-contact safety in India, realistic MOQs and pricing, branding methods that survive rPET surfaces, GST treatment, and how Corpokit ships GRS-verified rPET drinkware pan-India.

What rPET Actually Is — and What It Isn't

Recycled PET (rPET) is polyethylene terephthalate resin produced from post-consumer PET waste — most commonly the soft-drink and water bottles that flood Indian waste streams. The process is straightforward: bottles are sorted by colour and polymer, washed, shredded into flakes, melted, filtered, and re-pelletised into food-grade resin. The pellets are then blow-moulded or injection-moulded into new bottles, tumblers and sippers exactly the way virgin PET is.

What it is not. rPET is not bio-plastic or compostable plastic (those are different polymers entirely — PLA, PHA — with their own use cases). It is not a chemical-recycling product unless the vendor specifies depolymerised or advanced-recycled PET (rare in India, premium tier). And a tinted virgin-PET bottle marketed as "eco" is not rPET — the colour is just dye.

Standard specifications. Bottle wall thickness 0.5–0.9 mm. Capacity 350 ml to 1 litre. Recycled-content percentages typically come in three bands: 50% rPET (cost-optimised, often blended), 80% rPET (the ESG-credible mid-tier most Indian buyers should target), and 100% rPET (premium tier, fully circular claim possible). The bottle body is the rPET component — caps are usually polypropylene (PP) and may or may not contain recycled content.

The honest sustainability claim. Unlike marketing-only "eco" finishes, a GRS-certified rPET bottle has an auditable paper trail from waste collector to finished good. This is the difference that lets a procurement team defend the claim under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 anti-greenwashing rules and against SEBI's BRSR Core scrutiny. See our sustainability in enterprise gifting framing for the broader ESG context.

GRS Certification, BIS / FSSAI Food-Contact Safety — and the Documents to Demand

The single biggest risk in rPET procurement is paying an rPET premium for virgin-PET goods. The protection is documentation. Three pieces of paper, no exceptions.

1. GRS (Global Recycled Standard) Transaction Certificate. Issued by an accredited certification body (Control Union, Intertek, SCS Global, others) and naming both the seller and the buyer for a specific shipment. The TC states the recycled-content percentage and the volume covered. A GRS scope certificate alone is not enough — it proves the vendor is certified, not that this specific PO is certified. Demand the TC against your PO number before final payment.

2. FSSAI / IS 14625 food-contact safety declaration. rPET destined for drinking-water contact must meet IS 14625 (BIS standard for plastic containers for packaged drinking water) and FSSAI's plastic packaging norms under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations 2018. Ask for the test report from a NABL-accredited lab, not just a manufacturer self-declaration.

3. EPR registration under the Plastic Waste Management Rules. Producers, importers and brand-owners of plastic packaging in India must register under the Extended Producer Responsibility framework. A vendor without an EPR registration cannot legally place plastic packaging on the Indian market. Verify on the CPCB EPR portal — takes 90 seconds.

The red flags. Vendors who quote rPET at virgin-PET prices, vendors who can produce a GRS scope certificate but no transaction certificate, vendors who substitute "recyclable" for "recycled" (these are completely different claims), and vendors who refuse to name the rPET resin supplier. See our BIS, Ecomark and FSC certifications guide for the broader certification verification playbook.

The 6 rPET Drinkware Formats That Actually Work for Indian Corporates

rPET works as a category only when the format suits the use case. Here are the six formats Corpokit ships at scale, with realistic MOQ and price bands for 2026.

1. Standard 500 ml rPET water bottle, screw-cap (₹120–₹180 per bottle, MOQ 100). The lowest-friction entry point. Pan-India onboarding kits, conference giveaways, CSR distributions. Single-colour UV print on the body. The default "sustainable office bottle" SKU.

2. Premium 750 ml rPET sport-cap bottle (₹220–₹380 per bottle, MOQ 250). Sport-cap or flip-top lid, slimmer profile, often with a silicone grip sleeve. Strong for IT and consulting onboarding kits across Gurgaon Cyber City, BKC Mumbai and Bengaluru ORR. Multi-colour UV print or full-wrap heat-transfer label.

3. Double-wall rPET tumbler with leak-proof lid (₹350–₹650 per piece, MOQ 250). Insulated body (cold drinks stay cold 4–6 hours; not suitable for hot beverages). Premium executive tier, often paired with a coffee subscription voucher inside the gift box.

4. rPET kids' sippers for family-day distributions (₹150–₹250 per piece, MOQ 250). A category most procurement teams overlook. Family-day and Children's Day distributions land harder with employees when the kit includes something the child uses.

5. rPET bottle + jute carry-sleeve combo (₹180–₹280 per kit, MOQ 250). The plastic-free outer packaging amplifies the recycled-content message. Excellent for Earth Day and World Environment Day distributions.

6. Custom-mould rPET bottle programmes (₹350–₹800 per piece, MOQ 2,000–5,000). For brands wanting a proprietary bottle shape. Mould tooling costs ₹2–₹6 lakh amortised over the order. Suitable for D2C brands, large MNCs running multi-year programmes, and trade-show flagship giveaways. Pair with our welcome kits for end-to-end execution.

Branding rPET — UV, Screen, Heat-Transfer and What to Avoid

rPET surfaces behave like virgin PET for branding purposes. The differences sit in micro-texture (slightly more visible flake speckling in high-rPET resin) and heat tolerance (rPET softens at ~75°C — keep all branding processes below that). Here's what works.

UV printing (best for multi-colour logos and photo artwork). UV-cured inks bond directly to the bottle surface, dry instantly under UV light, and survive dishwasher cycles in most quality tests. The default for 2–6 colour brand work. Cost: ₹15–₹40 per bottle for full-area coverage.

Screen printing (best for 1–3 colour solid logos at higher volumes). Cheaper per unit above 500 pieces. Slightly less crisp than UV for fine detail but excellent for solid-colour logos and theme lines. Cost: ₹8–₹20 per bottle.

Heat-transfer labels (premium full-wrap, photographic quality). A printed film is heat-applied to the entire bottle body. Ideal for D2C brand giveaways, festival editions and limited-edition runs. Higher cost (₹40–₹80 per bottle) but the visual impact is unmatched.

Pad printing (small accent areas — caps, base). Useful for adding a date, batch code or tagline on the lid or base when the body carries primary branding.

Avoid. Laser engraving on the rPET body (weakens the wall and looks rough on the speckled surface — restrict laser to stainless or aluminium accents). Solvent-based inks that aren't UV-cured (can leach and fail food-contact safety). And any branding process that exceeds 75°C.

Lead Times, MOQ Maths and Per-Recipient Pan-India Dispatch

rPET drinkware procurement runs on a predictable calendar. Plan against it; don't fight it.

Production lead time. 7–10 working days for standard rPET bottles and tumblers (MOQ 100–250). 10–14 working days for full-wrap heat-transfer or multi-colour UV runs. 21–30 working days for custom-mould programmes (factor in 7–10 days for tooling sign-off before production starts).

MOQ economics. Below 100 pieces, per-unit branding setup costs dominate — a 50-bottle run can cost the same per bottle as a 100-bottle run. The most cost-efficient slabs are 250, 500 and 1,000. Procurement teams that aggregate Q2 onboarding + Earth Day + Q3 onboarding into a single PO typically save 15–25% per unit vs. three separate POs.

Festive-season planning. Earth Day (April 22) and World Environment Day (June 5) are the two demand spikes for rPET specifically — book 4 weeks ahead for either. Diwali demand pulls drinkware broadly (insulated stainless, copper) more than rPET, but ESG-anchored Diwali programmes are growing year on year.

Per-recipient pan-India dispatch. For distributed teams, Corpokit ships per-recipient with tracking. Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai land in 5–7 days from our Delhi NCR production; metros are 3–5 days. See our broader corporate gifting Delhi NCR coverage for context.

Storage. Cool, dry, away from direct sunlight. PET — virgin or recycled — yellows under prolonged UV exposure. Original cartons in a non-humid stockroom are sufficient; no special climate control needed.

Budget Bands, ROI and the ESG Story That Travels on LinkedIn

rPET drinkware is one of the few sustainable-gifting categories where the cost premium over the virgin alternative is now genuinely small — typically 10–18% — while the disclosure benefit is concrete.

Per-recipient cost. A 1,000-employee company sending a 750 ml premium rPET bottle at ₹280 + per-recipient dispatch at ₹50 lands at ₹330 per employee, all-in. A virgin-PET equivalent would land at roughly ₹290. The ₹40-per-employee delta — ₹40,000 across the programme — buys an audit-grade ESG disclosure for the year.

Earned-content multiplier. rPET bottles photograph well, especially when the GRS line is printed visibly on the bottle. Employees who post the bottle on LinkedIn with the ESG line typically generate 3–6x the impressions of an unbranded bottle photo, because the content reads as a values signal not a brag.

The BRSR Core disclosure benefit. For SEBI-listed companies, a 1,000-bottle 80% rPET programme diverts roughly 17–18 kg of post-consumer PET. Documented and certified, this feeds directly into Principle 6 (environment) and Principle 2 (sustainability in value chain) of BRSR Core. For a private company with an upcoming IPO or a serious investor-relations programme, the same data point becomes useful in pre-IPO ESG diligence.

The recruitment-marketing benefit. Sustainability commitment is now a top-5 employer-brand attribute for under-30 knowledge workers in India. A documented rPET programme — photographed, captioned, linked to the company's ESG report — is collateral the careers page can use all year. Frequently Asked Questions

What is rPET drinkware and how is it different from regular PET?

rPET is recycled polyethylene terephthalate — resin made by collecting post-consumer PET bottles, mechanically washing and shredding them into flakes, then re-extruding the flakes into food-grade pellets that are blow-moulded or injection-moulded into new bottles, tumblers and sippers. Visually and functionally it is identical to virgin PET. The difference sits in the supply chain: every kilogram of rPET diverts a kilogram of PET waste from landfill or incineration, and the carbon footprint of the resin is 60–70% lower than virgin PET.

What certifications prove rPET is genuinely recycled?

The gold standard globally is the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) administered by Textile Exchange, which audits the chain of custody from waste collector to finished product. A credible rPET bottle ships with a GRS transaction certificate (TC) naming the recycled-content percentage (typically 50%, 80% or 100%). For India, also ask for the manufacturer's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) registration under the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016/2022, and an FSSAI/IS 14625 food-contact safety declaration. No GRS TC = treat the recycled claim as marketing copy.

Is rPET safe for repeated drinking water use in India?

Yes — food-grade rPET that meets FSSAI and IS 14625 norms is approved for repeated potable-water contact at ambient temperatures. The constraints are the same as virgin PET: do not microwave, do not fill with boiling water above 70°C, and replace bottles that show visible scratches or cloudiness. For hot beverages, recommend a 304-stainless or copper alternative from our drinkware range instead.

What is the typical MOQ and price for rPET drinkware corporate gifts in India?

MOQs are format-driven: 100 pieces for standard 500–750 ml rPET water bottles, 250 pieces for rPET tumblers and sippers, and 500 pieces for custom-mould programmes. Pricing for 2026 lands at ₹120–₹220 for basic 500 ml rPET bottles, ₹220–₹380 for premium 750 ml sport-cap bottles with rPET body, and ₹350–₹650 for double-wall rPET tumblers with leak-proof lids. Single-colour branding is typically included; multi-colour and full-wrap add ₹15–₹60.

How is rPET drinkware branded — does printing stick to recycled PET?

rPET accepts the same branding techniques as virgin PET. UV printing is the default for crisp multi-colour logos on bottle bodies. Screen printing works well for 1–3 colour solid logos at higher volumes. Heat-transfer labels (full-wrap photo-quality) suit premium tiers. Laser engraving is not used on rPET bodies (it weakens the wall) — restrict laser to lids or accompanying stainless components. See our UV DTF vs UV printing vs laser engraving guide for technique trade-offs.

What is the GST rate on rPET drinkware in India?

Plastic drinking-water bottles and tableware made of plastic, including rPET, sit at 18% GST (HSN 3924). ITC on free employee or client gifts is blocked under Section 17(5) of the CGST Act, and the ₹50,000/employee/year perquisite cap applies cumulatively. Full breakdown in our GST on corporate gifts guide.

How does rPET drinkware support BRSR Core and ESG disclosures for listed Indian companies?

For listed companies submitting BRSR Core under SEBI, every kilogram of rPET used in a gifting programme contributes to recycled-content packaging and waste-circularity disclosures. A 1,000-bottle rPET programme (500 ml each, ~22g resin) diverts roughly 22 kg of post-consumer PET — small at unit level, meaningful at portfolio level. The GRS transaction certificate is the audit-grade evidence your sustainability team needs in the disclosure file.
